ECO CODES   |   ECO SYSTEM   |   ECO CODING

Eco codes are a unique system of classifying all chess openings by means of 500 codes (from A00 to E99). Eco codes (20,000+ total) are used as the classification basis in an Encyclopedia of Chess Openings or ECO, a virtually languageless reference work first published in 1974 by Chess Informant in 5 volumes (A to E, each covering one classification group). This lead to it becoming known as the Eco System, now a FIDE-accepted standard classification used by everyone worldwide.

Basic Chess Opening Strategies

First, control the Center Squares (d4,d5,e4,e5). If you have control of the center of the board then your opponent will have to move along the sides of the board. Try to move each piece only once in the opening and always try to keep at least one pawn in the center of the chessboard. In the opening make only one or two pawn moves, no more. If possible try to develop your pieces so that they threaten something or make it difficult for your opponent to develop.

It is generally a good idea to develop knights before bishops. When you develop your pieces do not move them to a square which can easily be attacked by your opponent and consequently drive your chessman to another square. Do not bring your Queen out too early as it can be chased around the board by enemy pieces and you will lose valuable time and fall behind in development. Bring your King to safety by castling as soon as possible and preferably on the king’s side. Do not sacrifice (give away your pieces) without a good reason. For example, a good reason to sacrifice a pawn might be to get ahead on development, to prevent your opponent from castling, to build up a strong attack or to deflect.
